Choosing furniture is easier when you know both the size of the room and the space needed to use each item. A table can fit on the floor yet leave too little room to move a chair. A cabinet can fit against a wall yet block a door when its drawers open. Make a measured plan before comparing styles.
Start with a simple room sketch
Record the room’s length and width, then mark doors, windows, sockets, fixed cabinets and other obstacles. Include the direction each door opens. For irregular rooms, measure each usable section separately instead of treating the entire floor as one rectangle. Keep the measurements in one unit to make comparisons easier.
Measure the furniture footprint
Ask for the overall width, depth and height of the selected product. Seat width alone does not describe a chair’s full footprint. A bed’s outside dimensions may be larger than the mattress size. For a furniture set, record every piece rather than relying on a combined promotional image.
Use removable tape to mark the footprint on the floor. Walk around it and test the activities you expect to do: opening storage, moving chairs and reaching windows. Include clearance for a reclining chair, footrest or sliding keyboard tray where relevant.
Match the measurement to the use
- Dining: allow chairs to move back and preserve a route past occupied seats.
- Storage: account for drawers, hinged doors and access for cleaning.
- Workstations: compare chair arm height and seat adjustment with desk clearance.
- Balconies: preserve access to doors, drains and planters.
If the layout includes an outside seating area, Furniture Flair’s outdoor living space planning guide explains how to coordinate seating, shade and planting. Use it for planning advice, then compare each product’s confirmed measurements.
Check the delivery route
Measure the narrowest doorway, corridor, staircase and lift opening along the route. Consider corners and landings, as straight-line width is not the only restriction. Ask whether the furniture arrives assembled, flat-packed or in separate sections. Confirm delivery and assembly arrangements before ordering.
Build a shortlist you can compare
